So, what are some reliable trucks I can start to look at saving up for? The Outback isn’t going to happen because one of the workplaces is at the end of 100 kilometres of grid road (lovely Cumberland House), and many others are in similarly remote spots. So, any suggestions other than the Tacoma? And yes, the 6.2 Raptor is on the list because hell yes it is .

*I know, I’m only about 50 kilometres south of what’s considered Northern Saskatchewan now, but you know, more north

try the F150 2.7L ecoboost, honestly

the new ram 1500s are quite nice too... personally i wouldn’t even consider anything else

It's totally not better up there, is it.

I don’t trust the Ram in the middle of nowhere. And the 2.7... maybe. I might trust a V8 more for reliability in -50.

Oh no, it’s much worse. But by going north, it makes me better at my job, look better for my promotion, and maybe  I could get back to Ontario.

I just need something with decent enough ground clearance, heated seats, and reliability. That’s it. So if base does it, good by me!

Raptor Raptor Raptor Raptor. Get a 2012+ and make sure it has the Torsen front diff and it’ll pull you out of any snow bank or mud hole you find yourself in. Plus, it already comes with the little orange LED lights that Tacoma owners are all  installing on their trucks for some reason.

And you probably also want your coworkers to stop making fun of you for driving a puny little snot rocket.

I have snowmobiles for the first one, though. My buddy has a story from the OPP about an officer chasing a guy down a snowmobile trail while the officer was driving a Crown Vic. Buddy went to take a jump on a snow mobile, it was actually a concrete wall. Survived, they managed to get all his teeth and send it in the ambulance, the guy when he was released brought a thank you card for the officer to his detachment, since they were able to save his smile.

And yes, the ribbing gets annoying. But you’re right, the Raptor would be sweet.

You can  get a 180 HP diesel that gets 28 MPG or a 300 HP V6. Its got the AWESOME MultiMatic DSSV suspension. And I believe you can get it in either Ext or Crew cab configs.

Just spent a week north of Grande Prairie Ab, and I was the only Tacoma in that whole part of the country.. seriously I counted two Tundras and my Tacoma in a week of driving around range roads and visiting little towns..

I suspect northern Sk to be much the same.

If you need the towing or payload capacity, a 2.7 ecoboost F-150 would be hard to beat. The electronic locking rear diff is a nice touch, too. If you don’t  need the  capacity, I’d pickup your preferred flavor of Tacoma and be done with it.

Most likely. So what you’re saying is go American so that any mechanics will know what to do/have parts?

P ick a side between the big three so you don’t get pitchforked by locals was more my angle.. but yeah, parts too.

My only experience with the Colorado has been with a base model one, and it was fine for a base model truck. I’m not super picky about cars, and I’m even less so about trucks. My only must haves in a truck are AC, Radio, Locking Rear, and adequate capability to do truck stuff (i.e. haul, tow) . Virtually any truck meets my needs. Give your situation, I think you might be looking for a bit more. But unless you really need/want the extra room that the full size Raptor gives, a ZR2 may meet your needs. It’s at least worth a look.

I sat in a ZR2 and really. Part of me says the Z71 would be enough, but the extra ground clearance would be nice.

I’ve always thought the same way. But my uncle has 2 of them. He’s a car guy and so we all joked when he got his first one, figured he must have hit is head, had early onset dementia, or something. But he and my aunt both loved the thing so much he bought a second one so they could have his & hers, I guess.

It’s really just a regular 1500 series, just as capable. I think GM thought the ugly cladding helped soften it’s “manly truck like demeanor” for marketing purposes. Also, if you hate money (specifically your own money) and the environment , they made a 2500 HD version with the 8.1L big block engine!
